Hope beyond the holiday

Dear Olmert,

At the cabinet meeting this morning, the final one before Passover, you didn't miss an opportunity to wish Israel a happy holiday, saying:

I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Government, the nation and the entire Jewish People a happy, kosher, quiet and safe holiday. It is the beginning of spring and the country is in bloom. This is the time to travel and hike throughout the country and enjoy both its beauty and the tranquility that the State of Israel can – and must – provide its residents. A happy holiday to all.

Does this wish extend to our partners in peace? You will meet your partner in peace, Abu Mazen, this evening. Will you offer him your wishes? Will you offer him hope? Will you break bread or bad habits? What will you offer the other tonight? What hope will you offer us?

We want hope beyond the holiday. Happy, kosher, quiet and safe is not enough. Can we have hope? Beauty and tranquility will be found in nature. The state can and must provide hope.
